The Rotorua Anglers Association produced the first Rotorua Trout Fishing Guide in 1965, and has since published seven new updated editions. The 8th edition, published in August 2016, is considerably updated and enhanced, containing 104 pages of up to date information on the fishable lakes and waterways in the Rotorua and surrounding areas. Greatly enhanced with colour photographs and detailed maps, the information includes where and how to fish the various waterways, covering fly fishing and the various boat fishing methods, as well as tips on techniques, selection of equipment, knots, flies, and much more. A brief history of the Rotorua lakes fishery is also covered, and information on the history and activities of the Rotorua Anglers Association and Eastern Region Fish & Game. This publication is intended as a guide to the many hundreds of trout fishing venues available in the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty area. It is mainly for the inexperienced angler or visitor to the area, but the “expert” is also likely to find something of value among these pages. The Ngongotaha Stream is the largest tributary of Lake Rotorua and during the spawning season large numbers of very big fish move upstream from the lake to spawn. A trout hatchery on the Ngongotaha is used for events and children's fishing days. The Ngongotaha Stream Restoration Project was officially declared open in August of 2001. Since then, many thousands of volunteer hours have been expended, creating a delightful bush walkway that meanders for some four kilometres upstream of the Ngongotaha township. Thousands of native trees, shrubs, ferns and grasses have been planted turning a former wasteland into a miniature forest that is now home to an increasing variety of native bird life. It's an ongoing project. Every week, dedicated volunteers are contributing time and effort to maintain and build on the results achieved over the last two decades. Existing pathways are maintained , trees are pruned and pest weed infestations are controlled. Annually, hundreds of native trees and shrubs are planted throughout the growing season and deep rooting native grasses are planted on the stream banks to help control erosion. This project is labour intensive, and relies on volunteers giving of their time and expertise. This is where you come in. The Rotorua Anglers Association has recently committed to a monthly Saturday morning working bee, which will focus on the stream itself, as seen from an anglers perspective. Effort will be focused on improving angler access to the runs and pools which are home to both Rainbow and Brown trout. The objective will be to create a more angler friendly environment whilst causing as little disruption as possible to the known pools and lies of resident trout. Willow and blackberry infestations are obvious targets and the removal of years of accumulated debris that litters the stream bed will certainly improve the anglers chances. The Ngongotaha is a productive, well stocked stream that draws anglers from all over the world. Open all year round, it provides a variety of fishing experiences for the thoughtful angler. The ongoing efforts of the Ngongotaha Stream Team and the Rotorua Anglers Association can only enhance its reputation. Register using the form below The A to Z fly fishing course offered by the Rotorua Anglers Association over a Saturday & Sunday will teach you all the basics and give you a solid foundation of knowledge and skill that will quickly transform you from a novice angler to a confident fisherman. All the gear and equipment needed for the duration of the course can be supplied free of charge, or you can bring your own fishing gear if you prefer. We can also advise on suitable equipment to buy. There are scholarships available for junior members if accompanied by an adult. The course consists of five indoor classes, and concludes with an outdoor session fishing one of the local waterways. Session 1 Understanding the different types of rod, reel and fly line combinations and the basic equipment needed to begin your fly fishing adventure. Session 2 Basic fly casting, theory and practice and the three most useful knots for fly fishing. Session 3 The trout's diet. An understanding of what a trout feeds on in lakes and streams and the tactics for catching trout. Fishing a nymph, dry fly, wet fly or streamer. Session 4 Putting it all together. A fishing trip to one of the local waterways with close quarter tuition from an experienced fisherman. A to Z Course fee is $120.00 Students 10 - 15 years old (inclusive) must be accompanied throughout the course by a parent or caregiver. The course is not suitable for those under 10 years old.
